Seattle voters keep gay clause

The highly-organized. Seattle gay community and its supporters pulled the plug on the recent flood of urban gay rights defeats across the country in the November 7 elections. Initiative 13, an effort proposed by the organization called. Save Our Moral Ethics (SOME), would have deleted the clause "sexual preference" from the civil rights statutes enacted in Seattle five years ago. Unofficial results

showed that the measure went down nearly to a 2-1 defeat; an overwhelming 63% of the electorate opposing passage.

Three groups were most responsible for this impressive defense of gay civil rights: Women Against Thirteen (WAT), Seattle Committee Against Thirteen (SCAT), and Citizens to Retain Fair Ernployment (CRFE). Each had taken a different technique on how to best attack 13.

In doing so, the many different methods laid the groundwork for victory. By far, educating the voters to the real issues and dangers involved in the repeal effort seemed to be the most effective. The size of the victory margin was also a credit to WAT, SCAT, and CRFE, for all were very active in voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives.

Meanwhile, SOME seemed to
